Henry Beaufoy was one of the founders and first secretary of the Association for Promoting the Discovery of the Interior Parts of Africa. Founded in 1788, the Association sponsored several expeditions to the Western Sudan and North Africa during the late 1780s and 1790s including the famous Mungo Park expedition of 1795-97.
